Did you know you can eat an ear bud without side effects? My son proved this theory about a week ago.
Normally my ear buds are just lying around on a counter somewhere. Usually our little bear pays them no mind. This day was different. He was playing with them and trying to get them to do things they weren't intended to do. Natasha started crying because she was hungry, so naturally, I went to her. My little man comes around the corner smacking his mouth and looking as if he just chewed someth... Continue reading ...
Glo-stick

His first encounter with a glo-stick was a sight to behold. We had some left over from a party. I generally save stuff like that (stickers, coloring books, etc) for times when he's bored or needs a distraction. Well he was very distracted by these! I cracked them and wound them up to make a bunch of bracelets. Leading him to the bathroom was the best part because once inside he was in disbelief at what he was seeing. He then spent the next 20 minutes opening and closing the bathroom door to s... Continue reading ...
Brr, it's cold outside!

Our little bear has quite the imagination. Recently he's become very interested in snow and the conditions surrounding it.
The other day he went outside to play in the snow. Then he came running in telling me he needed to wear his big red jacket because he was cold. He called me out to have a snowball fight with him. Keep in mind we were having a heat wave and the a/c was on in the house.
When we were driving home from church he started rubbing his arms and repeatedly said, "brrr, it's cold!" T... Continue reading ...
Oh the wonderful world...
Last week Alex decided he was an extreme adventurer and explorer.
It was a day where he managed to get into things faster than I could clean up the messes left behind in his wake. He spent some time turning the electric tea kettle off and on and off and on. Then moved his stool to the sink and played with dirty dishes and pans, grabbed the clean strainer on the counter and took it to the hardwood for an experiment. Apparently there hasn't been much R&D on the result of standing in a strainer w... Continue reading ...
Vocabulary Words
Today we were reading a vocabulary book for toddlers. It's questionable whether it was considered reading since Alex can't "read" and it was only one word per page anyway. BUT, that's what we were doing. Really this book is meant for babies but seriously, what baby is going to tell you what these pictures mean? It should be called "Toddler's First Words." Some editor might've missed the boat on that one. At some points I felt it was unfair to ask Alexander what the picture was because, in my ... Continue reading ...
Funny Alex
I've been consistently telling Alex to say "excuse me" after he burps. For the last two years. I figured even if he didn't understand what I was saying when he was a 1 yr old...eventually he'd get it. Sure enough he did! Yesterday he was sitting on the couch and out came a little burp. Before I could even respond, he said "excuse me!" It was surprising and so cute! And he's done it several times since then so I'm hopeful it'll stick.
Alex has entered the age of creativity with the way he sees ... Continue reading ...
Love the Blanket
My son has a deep love for his blanket.
As much as I tried to steer him towards one of the many blue blankets we had, he went for the only white blanket. It has nubs. It's not as "white" as it used to be. But it's probably his dearest treasure on earth.
Today when I pulled it out of the dryer, I casually left it in the laundry basket with his other clothes to see how long it would take him to see it. He was like an animal spotting it's prey, plotting the best way to retrieve it from the basket.... Continue reading ...
Captain Obvious
"You find the mail, Mommy?" "You eating the pasta? "Tasha's crying?" "You see Daddy?" These are a few examples of what we hear everyday. You learn to acknowledge him quickly or else the question/statement is repeated at increasing volume. They're questions because of the way he chooses to intonate. But really, they're statements because he's not expecting anything more than an acknowledgement that he's letting you know something. If you've heard his little voice, you can input his level of excit... Continue reading ...
Translation, please
Frequently, Alex will engage us in conversation. 72.6% of the time, I don't know what he's specifically saying, although I can glean the general idea from hand gestures or words I know. He seems to get most insistent when we don't follow his train of thought and he's SO sure you should know what he's asking for or trying to tell you. Yesterday he was asking for a ranch dressing packet that was inside the original box. But neither Jeff nor I could figure out WHAT he was trying to communicate. ... Continue reading ...
I'm Alex
Last night we hung out with some good friends we haven't seen in awhile and I was reminded of when Alex was a baby. He was one of the last babies born during the first round of babies within our close friends. The result was he was frequently referred to as "Baby Alex" so the older toddlers and kids would be gentle with him. This is a habit I've picked up and now use to help Alex understand about younger children. What's comical is that he is such a big boy for his age and always has been. He... Continue reading ...
Hiding
Today was another swim lesson. As we walked up and down the stairs to get ready, I came down looking for his suit and rash guard I'd placed on the kitchen table. Looking around didn't reveal anything so I turned to my bright son and asked, "where's your bathing suit?" He replied with, "It's hiding."
He was acting odd but I couldn't quite figure out why so I looked to where he was pointing on the ground under the table and didn't see anything. I asked again, "where's your bathing suit, Alex?"... Continue reading ...
My Boggles!
Today was a swim lesson with Lauren, one of our babysitters. Afterwards, he shivered his way across the street to our house and we jumped in the "hot" tub. More like a bath. But perfect for extended periods of play. He had Nemo, Buzz and Woody but it wasn't complete until he had his "boggles." When Dad walked out with his goggles, he squealed with excitement and proceeded to spend the next hour or so dunking himself and looking at his toys and Daddy underwater. We witnessed the first nose bur... Continue reading ...
Bedtime Stories
I'm seriously blessed by how darling my boy can be when we get ready for bed. We sang Julie Andrews' "Doe a Deer" while brushing teeth, read lots of Bible stories about boats, made the bed (made sure his blanket was "right there" in its special place) and got tucked in, both prayed to God and sang the "Jesus Song" (Jesus Loves me, this I know...) and then said goodnight and "I love yous" back and forth numerous times. In fact, I just had to leave in the middle of writing this post to lay out h... Continue reading ...
RAW!
Recently I was thinking about the lion from The Wizard of Oz and I thought of Alexander. The lion wanted courage, a seeming contradiction since he was, after all, a lion. Alex is a seeming contradiction as well. He doesn't look like a lion but he sure has an overabundance of courage! And a tremendous heart. We regularly feel like those lions on the animal shows where the cubs are climbing all over the parents, batting at them and just trying to get some attention. Every now and then the paren...
